SBIC Newsletter: Back In Motion

As we settle back into the semester, SBIC is officially getting back into the full swing of things. The newest volume of the SBIC Journal launches this month. Our mentorship program is also getting underway and we have great speaker events coming up soon. We also have the SBIC Soccer Tournament coming up quickly. There are so many great ways to get involved with the club over the next few weeks.
For the journal I am super excited to get things rolling again. This semester you should expect to see many stories that go beyond the play by play of the game. We’ll be looking at industry trends, sports business, pop culture, major games and some of the moments that remind us why sports are important.
SBIC Events
The SBIC Mentorship Program is here for you. It’s an awesome way to build connections and learn from someone with experience in the industry. You’ll also have someone in your corner as you think about your future and how you continue to navigate your journey into a career. If you're interested, reach out to Leila at leilamar@umich.edu.
Next week, SBIC will also host Attitude, Effort, Results (AER) for a speaker event on Tuesday, October 6. It should be a great chance to hear an alternate perspective on leadership, mindset and what it takes to create results especially in the sports industry. Keep an eye out on the instagram @michigansbic for a post with details on the event!
The SBIC Soccer Tournament is this Saturday, October 3, from 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at Mitchell Field. We’re still looking for teams, so grab some friends and put a squad together. Check out Instagram for more details and scan the QR code at the bottom of the post to sign a team up.
What's Happening in Sports?
One of the biggest sports business stories this week isn’t happening on a field or court, it's happening in the capital of our country.
On September 28, The Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act of 2026 by a 77–22 vote. The bipartisan legislation would establish federal rules in areas including NIL compensation, athlete revenue sharing, transfers, scholarships and medical coverage. It would also give the NCAA additional authority, including limited antitrust protections surrounding certain rules. The legislation now moves to the House of Representatives. While it has not yet become a law, looking at the way the senate voted gives some insight into what the house may swing for as well.
The bill comes at a time when college athletics is constantly changing and trying to find out what its next era looks like. Supporters of the legislation argue that a national framework could create more consistency after years of different state laws and constantly changing NCAA policies. Critics have raised concerns about the protections it would provide the NCAA and whether athletes would have enough power and labor rights under the newly proposed system.
Looking Towards the Future
There is already so much happening within SBIC and across the sports industry, and we’re just getting started. I hope to see everyone at our upcoming events, and I’m excited to keep this momentum going throughout the rest of the semester.
