When men’s hockey begins at the 2026 Winter Olympics, it will mark the return of NHL players to the international competition — who last participated in 2014. The tournament arrives with global competition stronger than ever, but four nations enter as clear medal favorites: Canada, the United States, Sweden and Finland.
The 2026 Winter Olympic men’s hockey tournament will feature three groups of four teams participating in a round-robin format to determine seeding for the knockout rounds. Play will then proceed in a single-elimination format until the winner of the gold medal is determined. There are key differences between Olympic ice hockey and the NHL. First, the Olympic rink is slightly shorter and wider than an NHL standard rink. Fighting is also much more strict in the Olympics than it is in the NHL, with major penalties and ejections as potential punishments for dueling it out.
Group A consists of Canada, Switzerland, Czechia and France. Team Canada enters as the gold medal favorite across most betting sites and analytical models, and for good reason. Its lineup features generational talent across all positions. From elite scorers like Connor McDavid and Nathan Mackinnon to top defenseman including Cale Makar, Canada is a force to be reckoned with. They have a mix of veteran leaders, leaning on Sydney Crosby, Brad Marchand and young superstars in Macklin Celebrini. Canada’s balanced depth allows them to roll multiple scoring lines while maintaining its defensive stability.
Group B contains Finland, Sweden, Slovakia and Italy. Sweden and Finland are both considered low favorites to win the gold. While neither of these Scandinavian squads posed much of a challenge at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, they can’t be completely written off, as they are capable of pulling off surprise upsets.
Sweden excels at disciplined team play. Its focus on structured defense with stars including Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson makes them very difficult to play against, especially in international tournaments.. Finland, on the other hand, looks to defend its 2022 gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. While they are missing key players such as Aleksander Barkov and Patrik Laine, they still have scoring firepower with Stars leading point scorer Mikko Rantanen and Hurricanes leading point scorer Sebastian Aho. Both could make a major splash in this year's tournament.
Lastly, Group C features the United States, Germany, Latvia and Denmark, with the clear favorite being the United States to lead the group. For the United States men’s national team, the roster is built around its deepest talent pool in decades. With stars such as Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Jack Hughes, Matthew and Brady Tkacuck, the Americans bring speed and elite scoring to every line. The US also has young, dynamic defensive talent with Quinn Hughes, Charlie McAvoy and Zach Werenski. This defense is backed by Connor Hellebuyck, Jeremy Swayman and Jake Oettinger, arguably the most talented goaltender trio in the Olympics. This United States team is stacked, but they will face a big challenge at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The last time this group played together, they were defeated by Team Canada in overtime in the 2025 4 Nation’s Face-Off.
With NHL stars back in uniform, the 2026 Winter Olympics may be one of the most competitive men’s hockey tournaments ever. Whether it ends up in a renewed North American rivalry or a stunning upset, one thing is certain: Olympic hockey is back, and the chase for gold begins in Milan-Cortina.
